Threading games: ideas for fine motor activities

05/10/2026

Threading games offer a specific action: passing a cord through the holes in a figure. When comparing materials, a useful difference is what you want to build along that path: a geometric shape, a free composition or a dressed figure.

This article brings together examples for preparing the game. If you are choosing a material for an autistic child, connect the activity with their interests and the instructions for the item you will use.

Shapes or characters: two play options

Shapes for Threading, item 815, includes figures and cords. Its manual identifies the start and end of the path and describes threading methods. The documentation states 3+ and includes warnings about small parts and the long cord. Review these instructions and maintain supervision during the activity.

Dressing Dolls, item 986, offers an activity for dressing figures. You can consult its manual and compare that activity with geometric shapes before choosing a set.

The choice depends on the game: following a figure's outline or choosing clothes for a character. Both products retain their own instructions and warnings.

Idea 1: choose a figure and introduce the path

Prepare the figure and cord corresponding to the chosen use. Locate the starting point on the material and show the first part of the path, following the manual.

You can offer a choice between two figures before starting. Once one is chosen, point out the section you will follow and decide what support to offer. The rest of the set can remain stored during that activity.

To finish or change activities, put the cord away with the material. Do not leave cords accessible without the specified supervision or change their length or ends to improvise a different setup.

Idea 2: choose an outline

When the activity focuses on a shape, you can look at the path before threading. Decide whether to follow the threading method in the manual or choose another of its permitted methods.

Choosing the path can be part of the game: select a figure, describe what you want to do and start at the indicated point. Keep creative choice separate from the material's safety requirements.

Idea 3: dress a character

With Dressing Dolls, the starting point can be a question: “what clothes shall we choose for this character?” Present the options you will use, choose the combination and follow the assembly described in its documentation.

You can give the character a name or invent an occasion for that outfit. The story is an idea for shared play; threading and joining the pieces follow the manual.

What to observe when preparing another activity

Note which figure or character the child chose, which method you presented and which part needed support. This record helps you decide how to organise the next activity; an isolated experience does not establish general product benefits.

For another activity involving movement and paths on paper, see the prewriting activities. To compare these materials with the rest of the selected catalogue, visit the selection of toys and educational materials.
